The field of Consciousness

For it was, as always, underlying, containing, offering, in this illusory imperfection, the paradoxical opportunity of liberation.

Here’s what I wrote last week:

“Find what remains stable in you, whatever the situation. It’s from here that a direction, a quality, a strength is impelled: by this presence.

Here, you cannot be manipulated, you cannot be deported, you cannot be uprooted from Consciousness, whatever the external circumstances.

Then comes the true assurance of being yourself, of welcoming yourself, of knowing that everything passes and welcoming what is, of giving yourself true love, gentle esteem, tenderness, of loving life and your neighbour as yourself.”

When I wrote it, in the comfort of a luminous, limpid and serene inspiration, it was clear, obvious and simple.

Yesterday, this intellectual realisation collided with the reality of life, where, without having seen it coming, in the midst of a harmless interaction, in a climate of trust, a missile hit me in the heart. I’d forgotten that we’re constantly on the battlefield and that each of us is a minefield, with warring grounds, bearing secret wounds that can be reactivated at any moment…

The field of Consciousness has apparently not held up to the offensive of the infiltrating unconscious, like when a dam breaks and the water rushes in with all its power.
The great waters of ancestral suffering rose up and overwhelmed me.
The suffering of this childish incomprehension in the face of the evil of the world and the naive refusal to accept it, the suffering within our daily pains with the totality of hell unfolding at the end of the line, despite the splendour that never ceases to discreetly offer itself to us.

The fiercest wars being waged somewhere on the planet are taking place within all of us, within our fears, our struggles, our anger and our judgements, within the accusations, condemnations and reproaches that we hand out to ourselves and that we project onto others, in this infinite mirror, secretly hoping that something or someone outside ourselves will deliver us and save us.

So for me yesterday, 3 insignificant words were 3 arrows that hit their target without even meaning to, a secret space in my heart where the main wound, common to all humanity, resides: the lack of love, acceptance and recognition of the precious life within us, the identification with our provisional body, the fear of death, which Brel called the defeat that is at the very end, the constant struggle or resignation that follows, with all our outdated rationalisations and justifications, with our vain attempts to distract ourselves from it or extract ourselves from it.

The field of Consciousness has apparently not held. Apparently. For it was, as always, underlying, containing, offering, in this illusory imperfection, the paradoxical opportunity of liberation.

It was in this collapse, in this tearing apart of a concept, that it became alive in me, not through its supposed mastery but through its sensitive experience, beyond the comfortable. And that’s how we learn to walk: we fall and we get up again, more experienced.
The key is not to judge these moments when we fall, but to embrace them as part of the path, to appreciate what we are learning, whatever the context in which we are learning.
And then, little by little, bring more kindness, gentleness, tenderness, flexibility, ease and confidence to our steps, right up to the point of dancing…

Everything happens in the field of Consciousness. So who are we really? The body? The personality? Consciousness?
The answer is obviously not binary and is a complex weave.
That’s why another key is to identify ourselves less with the mental objects that evolve in the field of consciousness than with this Witness Consciousness that is our foundation in truth. We can then articulate our lives more and more easily in this movement between Consciousness and Life within this Consciousness, playing more freely because we are less identified with the theatre that is constantly taking place. How much energy do we expend rectifying what is happening in the theatre instead of realising that we are founded in the Light projecting Consciousness and the Consciousness in which it appears? What happens when we live rooted in Consciousness and the Light that underlies Consciousness? This Consciousness is a witness. How is it active? How does it regenerate?

Do we realise everything that comes into play when two human beings meet? The primordial elements, the memory of the earth, the animal dimension, the different levels of organisation on a biological, chemical and physical level, personal, genetic, family, ancestral, cultural, geographical, historical and archaic memories, the different instances and strata of the subconscious, the unconscious, the conscious, the psyche, the soul, the mind, the spirit? All these components find their unifying foundation only in Love, that is to say that which encompasses and transcends this scattered sum of elements and orders them by neglecting nothing, subtracting nothing and adding nothing.

It is interesting to observe the common structure on different scales…

The big bang is about 13.7 billion years old. This numerical notion does not, of course, capture the power, the phases and the splendour of the long process of development of the universe…

A star with the mass of the Sun lasts around 10 billion years.

The history of the Earth began 4.6 billion years ago.
Over time, species appear and disappear. The evolution of a species is marked by an increase in the number of individuals up to a maximum, then a decrease up to a maximum, then a decrease until extinction.
These stages are chronological markers that make it possible to establish phases in geological time. Extinctions have occurred at any time in the history of life, while massive and simultaneous extinctions are rarer and are considered to be the sign of ecological events on a planetary scale, known as crises.
Geologists have divided geological time into a chronological scale: into eras subdivided into periods, themselves subdivided into sub-systems and then into stages…
The most important divisions, or eras, correspond to the appearance or disappearance of entire groups of organisms.
I invite you to discover the Earth’s geological times, the main eras and periods that allow us to approach the living organism that is the Earth in a completely different way, with these cycles marked by the emergence and disappearance of forms.

What is true on the scale of stars, planets and organisms is true on every scale.

All the cells in the body (37,000 billion of 200 distinct types) do not have the same lifespan. Some are constantly being renewed, while others have been around for years.
The cells lining the small intestine are renewed every 3 to 5 days. The keratinocytes in the epidermis take 45 days to reach the surface of the skin and then die. Red blood cells have a lifespan of 120 days. The average age of bone cells, osteocytes, is 10 years. Our neurons are around 85 years old. They do not divide and are almost all present from birth. The interconnections between neurons are enriched by our learning and experience.
Every civilisation is born, develops, reaches a peak and then declines until it disappears.

Every form manifests the principle that animates it and then disappears. The cessation phase of a form involves destructuring it and extracting its quintessence.
It is interesting to note that black holes absorb matter and retain its essential information, just as we eat food and extract its nutrients and energy. Black holes are also nurseries for stars.

Energy cannot be converted from one form to another; it can neither be lost nor created from nothing according to the principle of conservation of energy. It remains constant for an isolated system because no energy is exchanged with the outside world.

Where do our lives take place? What are they really for?
What remains of our time on earth?
What remains when we collapse?

What remains when all human values are flouted, as they are every time a human being treats another human being as an object, humiliating and manipulating them, denying the sublime and fragile light hidden in this complex body?

Every time we forget to perceive life, light and love and capitalise on these values out of ignorance and survival?

It is precisely here, on the ground, that man can rise again, stand upright in Love, not out of resilience or defiance, nor for the sake of honour, but out of Love, because something more powerful than all our calculations is awakening and carrying us in its simplicity. It reveals us as fractal, as a link in the chain, derisory in our limited locality and essential as a consciousness witnessing a process that goes beyond us and includes us. Realising its perfection pulverises our limited human conceptions and, through this breach, opens up the possibility of marvelling at the mystery of life, our own life and that of every other.

It opens the way to compassion for the human condition we all share, to humility and kindness.

It opens the way to forgiveness and dialogue.

Finally, it opens the way to the realisation that, however brief our time on earth may be, we have in our hands the choice, every moment, of what we are going to do with it. This freedom is not easy. It requires us to face up to our greatest fears, to go through them, to be crossed by them, until we find what is essential, indestructible, unalterable: that seed of Light within us.

By being curious, open and benevolent, by looking for what unites us rather than what opposes us, while respecting our differences, we can learn to live more harmoniously, more dynamically, by seeking the common good, by practising living in Consciousness.

Then it becomes Alive within us, and we can tune in more freely, creatively and participatorily to this great fabric of the cosmos, fully assuming our role in it.

What about you? What does it mean for you to live more harmoniously, more freely, creatively and participatorily?

What else do you want to live by and express of yourself?

I am looking forward to hearing from you!
